680 HDB blocks to get solar panels

The Housing Board plans to equip 680 HDB blocks and three of its commercial & industrial properties by end-2016 under its Solar Capability Building Programme, according to media reports.

Aside from the four towns — Tampines, Sembawang, Jurong East and Marine Parade – that will benefit from the latest round of solar panel installations, 200 HDB blocks across Singapore will be fitted with these energy savers by end-2014.

In line with this, Sunseap Leasing clinched the agency’s latest and biggest solar leasing tender to date two months ago, and the exercise also covers three commercial and industrial properties owned by HDB, namely Woodlands Civic Centre, Eastlink Industrial Building and HDB Hub at Toa Payoh.

The electricity that is generated by the solar panels will power the common areas of HDB blocks, like elevators, water pumps and staircase lighting. The town councils will only need to pay for the energy used but if no solar energy is harnessed, these common services will then have to rely on the usual electricity source.

Under the tender, Sunseap Leasing will shoulder the full cost of the solar panels, unlike the previous tenders where HDB funded a fraction of the cost to kick start the solar leasing programme.
